End of the Rainbow

So last night, possibly one of the faggiest evenings to date, in a theatre full gay 50somethings I was brought to un-controlable tears by Tracie Bennett's breathtaking portrayal of the tragic Judy Garland in the play End of the Rainbow at Trafalgar Studios. Set during Garland's exhausting attempt at yet another comeback whilst she battles with a tornado of booze and drugs, and ultimately loses the battle a few months later! When she whipped out Over The Rainbow, that was it...waterfalls! Tracie is simply AMAZING, UNFORGETABLE and just UNMISSABLE so go go go now now now!!!

OK, so as a little Bank Hol treat, the hubbie and I reluctantly left our post festive hibernation for some culture in the shape of the Rene Gruau exhibition at Somerset House. WOW...what a complete unconscious inspiration Gruau's work has had on my own illustrative technique! I have been aware of but never really explored the work of Rene Gruau until now! I have always adored the Jules image (above) along with his other male illustrations for Dior. Such an inspiration!!! The use of simple line, negative space and suggestive compositions hold such parallels with my own illustrations...so of course now I am a massive fan! Go check it out ASAP as I think there is only one week left! Loves it!

So must go find myself a print!

Last night I was uber-delighted that in honour of my attendence at the London premiere of her new movie Burlesque, Cher opted for a fabulous toussled ginger do! Doesn't she look nice?...

We had such an amazing night...the highlight of which, for me, was witnessing poor old Abi Titmus not only endure the ultimate red-carpet disaster of wearing the same dress as someone else, but also having her seat double booked with the cast of 'The Only Way is Essex' who sat defiant in their seats eating popcorn as Abi left, not to be seen again. The movie is fantastic of course!

Here I am loving it with the fabulous Josephine Green, long-time friend of our dear Cher!

No More Seasons!

I recently wrote a column for the latest issue of Creative Update, the alumni magazine of the University for the Creative Arts. Find my rantings below...

NO MORE SEASONS

Climate change and its threat to the traditional seasonal collections that have formed the backbone to the fashion industry has been hot gossip in the business for the last few years. Everyone is talking about season-less clothes or clothing for all climates, like it’s a bad thing! As a designer that has always been trans-seasonal, I for one will welcome a much-needed change to the fashion system.

There is nothing more annoying than going into a retailer in February as London is experiencing its worst snowfall for 20 years, and all you can find is gladiator sandals and sheer jersey vests; and likewise in July all you can find is wool coats. Isn’t it about time that everybody woke up to the reality that there is no strong difference between summer and winter anymore?

Retailers and designers need to understand that the fashion seasons and the weather seasons are seriously off-kilter. Maybe we need to redress the balance? I’m not saying that collections should lack diversity and reproduce the same fabrics season after season, but there is no diversity in offering a collection of limited styles when the climate has changed.

No-one loves variety more than I do and being creative with styling, mixing-up layers and encouraging people to wear my garments in a multitude of ways is my thing! I love wearing all things warm and woolly just as much as I love wearing all things cool and cropped. Why can’t we be offered it all year round?

As the seasons blur, maybe it is not only retailers and designers that have to adapt. With the economic climate also in crisis and everyone spending less on fashion, perhaps consumers also need a wake-up call. Surely buying less and investing in good design and quality has more seasonal life-span than anything the ‘fast-fashion’ retailers have to offer.

So, for the love of fashion, let the impending devastation of the industry commence!

I've recently had the pleasure of designing a range of re-usable carrier bags for Mowgli of Primrose Hill, London in aid of the annual Aveda Earth Month charity. Please read on to find out more on the collaboration and how you can help!

Menswear designer collaborates with Mowgli Hair Cutters to create eco-friendly shopping bags for global green charity

Conceptual menswear designer and art director Ross Jenkins has teamed up with Mowgli of Primrose Hill to produce the artwork for a range of limited edition shopping bags for Aveda’s Earth Month campaign. The creative team at Aveda concept salon Mowgli has been behind the hair and make-up of Jenkins’ work since his London Fashion Week show in 2006.

What is Earth Month?

Each year during the month of April, Aveda salon and spa professionals, employees and guests work together to raise funds for grassroots organisations that protect biodiversity and address environmental issues around the world. The Earth Month campaign focuses on a specified environmental topic each year, helping to raise awareness around the issue, cultivate and educate supporters, and contribute funds to dedicated non-profit conservation organisations.

Sharing Mowgli’s innovative and ethical values, Jenkins has captured the creative energy of the salon and produced two exciting prints for the eco-friendly, re-useable bags, available in black short-handled shopper or white long-handled tote.

Who is Ross Jenkins?

Ross Jenkins showcased his attention grabbing graduate collection at London Graduate Fashion Week in 2006 with huge critical acclaim and mammoth press interest. Jenkins’ collection gained him a nomination for the Gold Award at Graduate Fashion Week, and led to him winning Best Men’s Line and Best Traditional Line of the Year at the first UK Urban Fashion Awards in November 2006. Jenkins continued to make his stamp on the industry in September 2007 when he launched the Ross Jenkins menswear label as part of the London Fashion Week calendar. Billed as one of ‘The Future 500’ in 2008 by The Observer, Jenkins has expanded his creativity and now, in addition to the label, fuses Fashion and Art in collaborative projects and art direction.

On the partnership, Ross said “This opportunity has allowed me to both be part of such a great charitable cause and also create re-usable shopping bags that standout and bags that you actually want to use other than for carrying your bread and milk in.”

The Ross Jenkins for Mowgli bags are exclusively available at Mowgli, Primrose Hill from 1st April 2009 for a limited time only. Both bags are priced at £5 and all proceeds go to the Aveda Earth Month charity.
